ICU beds in Greece during the COVID-19 pandemic

🌿 Budding

This note summarises the total number of ICU beds that the available sources give for the pandemic period and, where the sources allow it, how many of them are linked to private facilities. The links are embedded directly in the text so that they show up normally in any markdown viewer. All the sources are in Greek.

What the sources can support

The sources do not give one single final figure for “the whole pandemic”; they show how capacity developed at different points in time. The safest reading is that at the start of the crisis Greece had 565 ICU beds in total, that capacity then rose to 1,143 beds in November 2020, and that later the Ministry of Health spoke of a more than doubling of ICU beds. What can be said with relative confidence

Confirmed by the more direct sources: the lowest clear starting point is 565 total ICU beds at the start of the crisis, and a clear later official point is 1,143 total ICU beds in November 2020. Sources: covid19.gov.gr · archived copy , Aftodioikisi, with Ministry of Health figures · archived copy .

Confirmed for the private contribution: at least one documented addition of 73 ICU beds from private facilities, or from cooperation with private-sector bodies, to the NHS. Source: 73 private ICU beds placed at the disposal of the NHS · archived copy .

Indirect, and not fully documented from a primary source: that private facilities took part more extensively later on, with reports of 350 private ICU beds within a total of 1,650. This needs confirmation from a primary ministerial document. Source: OT.gr · archived copy .
